PHASES – A CAMPAIGN OF CREATIVE VIGOUR
The creative pedagogy that has spanned over a decade in University of Lagos has witnessed diverse artistic originations since its inceptions. academia has also distinguished themselves in their different areas of specialization. Some of these, artists whose creative abilities were developed sequel to the tutelage in the institution has deemed it fit to address the art circle in a visual language. Phases is a campaign of creative sensibilities heralding the emergence of the University of First Choice's to the Nigerian contemporary art scene. This exhibition has brought to the public glare, the creative tendencies that permeate the UNILAG art school. The show featuring postgraduates, graduates and undergraduates scholars of the visual unit of the department is an evidence that University of Lagos art school is a stratum in the artistic rung of Nigerian art school.
The repertoire of works on display is intended to satisfy the audience's visual appetite. The myriads of works which ranges from oil colour, pasted, mixed media, carving, metal photography among others, speak volume about the artistic prowess enshrined in these artists.
A laudable feat for the artists is that they didn't hide under the eyebrow of academicism to churn out elitist or obscure art that reveals nothing but an artistic cliché. communicate in a visual language that is understood across board.
With this outing, the artistic tradition in university of Lagos has invariably induced a remarkable alertness in the Nigerian art scene. However, we look forward to seeing these artists in the nearest future finding a common ground where their stylistic or thematic possibilities will share activity that may culminate into an art school or movement; a reminiscent of Zaria, Ife etc.Happy viewing.
